November writing progress and looking ahead at December goals

I’m happy with my NaNoWriMo progress, even if I didn’t win. I closed out the month with 15,032 words, which was what I wanted to get a good start on my novel.

And instead of constantly saying I would try NaNoWriMo, and then quitting on the first day, like I have done since 2008, I gave it a real effort this time. I realized the pace and social pressure combined just don’t suit my writing style. I ended up closing my account. But I’m grateful to Nano because this made me commit to a longer manuscript, and this is the most I’ve written in one story in years.

It’s also helped me establish a regular writing schedule. I write at the same time in the mornings, and I wouldn’t have figured that out had I not committed to it.

Thus, my December goal is to keep going with my steampunk WIP. For December, my goal is to write 500 words a day. If I do that for 31 days, I will have added 15,500 more words to my novel. I may write more than that on some stretches, and may take some rest days, but I think that is realistic with my typical speed thus far. If I do that I will have 30,500 words by the end of the year. I find it helpful to track my word count as a way to keep myself accountable. I admit I love charts, to-do lists, and bullet journal habit trackers.

I also hope to write and submit four short stories in December. It will be a welcome break from the novel slog, I think. That will bring my total for the year up to 30.

My goals for the week ahead: Write a short story and submit it. Add about 3,000 words to the WIP. Focus on more research into the inner workings of steamships. And exercise and practice music at least three times. My goal of daily from last week might have been rather ambitious. Any at all is good.

Hope your Nano was equally successful. You won if you wrote anything at all this month. It’s been a hard month, that’s for sure, in a hard year.
